Triathlon Ireland cuts month-end close from days to hours

Triathlon Ireland has implemented cloud accounting software from AccountsIQ, cutting its month-end close process from five days to five hours.
The sports governing body had previously relied on disconnected systems, manual exports and Excel spreadsheets for management accounts and other finance work. That setup delayed reporting and made month-end processes harder to manage, with the finance team carrying out repeated spreadsheet checks and validations before producing reports.
The project also included expense management workflows via ExpenseIn, the expense management platform that AccountsIQ acquired in 2025, bringing those tasks into a single system.
Triathlon Ireland oversees triathlon and multi-sport in Ireland, with more than 250 events nationwide and support for 20,000 athletes. The finance overhaul is intended to give the organisation faster access to reporting across its operations.
Before the change, the body used 695 nominal codes in its finance structure. That has since been reduced to 200, alongside a shift from single-dimension to multi-dimensional reporting.
As a result, financial reporting that previously took days can now be completed in minutes, with manual processes replaced by real-time reporting.
Eric Harmon, Financial Controller at Triathlon Ireland, described the previous system as labour-intensive for the finance team.
"Before AccountsIQ, our management accounts involved dozens of Excel exports and constant formula checks. Reporting was time-consuming and month-end often became a challenge," he said.
He also praised the implementation process and support during the transition.
"What really stood out about AccountsIQ was the team's honest approach about the specific needs of us as an organisation," Harmon said.
"We were thrilled with the smooth implementation process from the team who provided enhanced staff training and a dedicated support manager who walked us through every step of the process. We wanted confidence that AccountsIQ would be a partner - not just a vendor – well beyond onboarding, and that has proven to be the case," he added.
Finance changes
The project centred on automating routine finance tasks and delivering more immediate reporting. For organisations that manage events, memberships and multiple activity streams, month-end timing can affect budgeting, oversight and internal decision-making.
Triathlon Ireland said the change has given its team greater confidence in the accuracy and speed of reporting, which it linked to the shift away from manual data handling and spreadsheet-based reconciliation.
"Following the integration of AccountsIQ's cloud accounting software, financial reporting that used to take days of manual work can now be done at the click of a button, which is a significant step forward for our team. AccountsIQ has given us much greater confidence in our reporting, and we are thrilled with the results," Harmon said.
AccountsIQ, headquartered in Dublin and with an office in London, serves more than 35,000 users across more than 85 countries. The company focuses on accounting software for mid-market businesses.
Darren Cran, Chief Executive of AccountsIQ, said many organisations still face inefficiencies tied to older finance systems and manual reporting processes.
"It has been a pleasure to join forces with Triathlon Ireland to enhance its financial operations and remove these long-standing inefficiencies. Fantastic organisations such as Triathlon Ireland continue to suffer from reduced financial efficiency due to a reliance on outdated systems and manual reporting. At AccountsIQ, we pride ourselves on supporting mid-market businesses by implementing our platform to enhance productivity, group accounting features, and next-level business intelligence," Cran said.
