NETGEAR has launched the PR30SG dual-WAN security gateway, bringing cloud-managed security to smaller sites through its Insight platform.

The product is aimed at small and midsize enterprises, branch offices and managed service providers that want to manage networking and security from a single console. The first year of security is included with each unit.

Insight already manages NETGEAR's switches and access points. With the addition of the PR30SG, administrators can also view alerts, policies, traffic and device health for gateway deployments across multiple locations from the same interface.

The launch is part of NETGEAR's broader effort to combine routing and security in the same product line. Networking and security are often bought separately, leaving IT teams and service providers to manage different tools, consoles and billing arrangements.

The PR30SG brings that approach to a lower price point. The same security layer is also available as a licence for the PR60X router, allowing existing users to add the service without replacing hardware.

The device supports remote provisioning through Insight, allowing a business or service provider to ship a unit to a new office or customer location, power it on and have it pull its settings from the cloud without sending a technician on-site.

For managed service providers, Insight's multi-tenant setup allows technicians to oversee several customer networks from one dashboard. Insight also integrates with professional services automation and remote monitoring and management tools including ConnectWise, NinjaRMM, Datto and Autotask.

Security features

The gateway includes web filtering to block access to malicious and restricted websites, as well as intrusion detection to flag suspicious network behaviour in real time. The bundled licence, based on NETGEAR Exium, also includes SASE cloud security designed to apply access controls and firewall policies before traffic reaches the local network.

Beyond security, the PR30SG includes dual-WAN failover and load balancing. If one internet connection fails, the gateway can switch traffic to a backup link, while both connections can also be used together to share traffic loads.

The hardware includes a dedicated 2.5G WAN port; support for WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IPSec site-to-site and client-to-site VPN; and a fanless design intended for office desks or wiring cupboards. NETGEAR also said the unit uses NDAA-compliant hardware built in line with Section 889 requirements.

Support terms include 90 days of free 24/7 phone support and limited lifetime 24/7 online chat support. An optional Overdrive plan adds a two-hour response service-level agreement, while the hardware carries a limited lifetime warranty.

"Lean IT teams and branch offices have usually had to choose between an inexpensive router and a security stack they don't have the budget or staff to run," said Iphie Chen, Director of Product Management, Enterprise, NETGEAR.

"The PR30SG gives them cloud-delivered security, managed in Insight alongside their switches and access points," Chen said.

Market focus

NETGEAR is positioning the product for organisations with limited on-site IT support and for service providers managing several smaller customer locations. That reflects a broader market push to simplify branch networking and security administration through cloud-based tools rather than locally managed appliances.

Connectivity Warehouse, a networking solutions provider in the Dallas area serving offices, healthcare facilities, warehouses and multi-site organisations, tested the PR30SG during NETGEAR's beta programme.

"The AI integration and the steady evolution of the Insight platform are exciting to see. The PR30SG is a powerful, cost-effective way for the SMEs and branch locations we support to get security in place without overlooking it. Web filtering, intrusion detection, SASE cloud security, dual-WAN failover and zero-touch provisioning come in one gateway, which makes it a strong contender in the SASE market. We're eager to get the PR30SG into our customers' hands," said Steven Cox, President, Connectivity Warehouse.

NETGEAR said the PR30SG is priced at USD $349.99 in North America. That price includes the first year of Exium cloud security, Insight cloud management and the standard support package.
