Red Hat and Panasonic Connect have agreed a global collaboration to preload Red Hat Device Edge on Panasonic TOUGHBOOK devices. The software will be available on rugged laptops and tablets in the coming weeks.

The deal brings Red Hat Device Edge to Panasonic's TOUGHBOOK range, used in edge computing deployments across sectors including manufacturing, government and defence. Customers will be able to choose the level of support required for their operational needs.

Red Hat Device Edge combines MicroShift, a lightweight Kubernetes distribution derived from Red Hat OpenShift, with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. The package is intended to provide a pre-tested setup for real-time data processing on devices operating in the field.

The combined offer is aimed at autonomous operations and workloads that need local processing rather than constant reliance on centralised infrastructure. This includes industrial automation, smart manufacturing and defence applications in remote or disconnected environments.

Panasonic positions the TOUGHBOOK line as rugged hardware designed for harsher operating conditions than standard commercial laptops and tablets. By adding Red Hat's edge software at the point of delivery, Panasonic is seeking to reduce deployment time for customers that want Linux-based systems for specialised workloads.

The collaboration also reflects wider demand for edge computing systems that can process data closer to where it is generated. In sectors such as manufacturing and defence, that matters when connectivity is limited or immediate on-site processing is required.

Target sectors

The joint offer is designed to meet security and compliance requirements in regulated and mission-critical settings. Panasonic identified government, defence and manufacturing as key markets.

For Red Hat, the deal extends its software further into hardware used outside conventional data centre and office environments. Device Edge is built around a compact Kubernetes platform and Linux operating system intended for small-footprint deployments.

Kelly Switt, Senior Director, Industrial Business, Red Hat, outlined the intended use cases for the partnership. "With this collaboration, Red Hat is helping Panasonic Connect transform beyond traditional rugged compute devices to intelligent, self-sufficient nodes that thrive in the most challenging and remote environments. Powered by Red Hat Device Edge, Panasonic TOUGHBOOKs provide the hardened foundation required for mobile command and control, tactical communication, drone control, real-time intelligence gathering and secure data processing in even the harshest conditions, delivering results where they matter most," Switt said.

Operational focus

Masaki Takeda, Director of Mobile Solutions Business Division in Europe, said the combination of hardware and software support was central to the offer. "The collaboration with Red Hat brings critical value to TOUGHBOOK by delivering advanced security, consistent cloud-to-edge integration, and long-term support. In today's complex and demanding operational environments, the security of hardware and software data is more vital than ever. Without comprehensive protection, defence investments can be rendered ineffective. By working with Red Hat - an organisation with a proven platform that is trusted by major government organisations and enterprises - TOUGHBOOK delivers a unified system that drives efficiency and productivity for users. Furthermore, the combined long-term support from Red Hat Device Edge and Panasonic's hardware helps maximise ROI and deliver stable, day-to-day operations for mission-critical investments," Takeda said.

The companies have not disclosed financial terms of the collaboration. They also did not specify which TOUGHBOOK models will carry the preloaded software first, beyond saying it will be available on Panasonic TOUGHBOOK devices.

Panasonic Connect is the business-to-business arm of the wider Panasonic group, while Red Hat supplies open-source software used across Linux, container and Kubernetes environments. The agreement links Panasonic's rugged hardware portfolio with Red Hat's edge software stack in a push to serve customers that need computing systems to keep running in the field.
