Gender bias in AI - how to spot it, and how to prevent it
A woman is looking for a new job, but the ads she sees are excluding some of the higher-paying, technical roles she is qualified for. Another asks an image tool for a "CEO" and gets a parade of men in suits.
These two imaginative scenarios, rooted in real-life experiences, show how AI is embedded deep into our everyday lives. But these models can carry hidden gender bias – which may not just mirror stereotypes but amplify them at scale.
For women and other underrepresented groups, the impact can be significant. Decisions may be made, and opportunities removed, before any human interaction happens. In the UK, making decisions based on gender or other protected characteristics can be unlawful – but not all AI-driven practices are caught by these rules, or they are thought about far too late.
Where gender bias appears in AI, and why
Bias shows up every day. For example, voice assistants have frequently defaulted to female voices, subtly reinforcing who serves and who leads. And financial risk models trained largely on male borrowing histories may misjudge women, not because they are riskier customers, but because the model has seen fewer comparable examples.
Unconsciously, bias seeps in through small, seemingly reasonable choices. Perhaps in the data selected, the outcomes prioritised, or the metrics used to define success. If the training data is skewed, then the model and outcome will be too. And if performance is measured without considering different groups, unequal outcomes become normalised.
Team diversity plays a crucial role in creating AI models. When the people designing AI share similar backgrounds or experiences, blind spots are more likely to go unnoticed. This can lead to a somewhat vicious cycle. Picture a hiring process for an AI engineering team. The AI used to filter applications in early stages might be biased, thus leading to a less diverse team, which is then less likely to create an inclusive AI.
How to prevent biased AI
The good news is that AI bias is not inevitable. It's the result of human choices, which means it can be redesigned.
At a product level, teams should stress-test datasets for representation, run fairness and performance checks across gender and intersectional cohorts, and document any model limitations transparently.
Simple questions can make a big difference:
- "Who might this not work for?"
- "What implications or harm does it cause if it's wrong?"
- "Who was in the room when we designed this?"
Organisations also need responsible AI frameworks in place, from bias impact assessments to ongoing monitoring once systems are live. Inclusivity needs to be a KPI for leaders, not a side decision. It needs to be tied to product success, customer trust and long-term success. Furthermore, whether unintentionally or not, biased or discriminatory outcomes from AI may be in breach of UK law.
Checklist for building more inclusive AI
- Audit your training data for representation across gender and other characteristics (race, age, disability, socio‑economic background).
- Define fairness and performance thresholds by gender and monitor over time.
- Include diverse voices throughout design, development and QA, with specific attention to underrepresented groups.
- Create clear escalation paths that empower teams to pause and make changes when bias is detected.
Even if you aren't the model owner, you can use these points to question vendors to ensure that the AI you adopt is inclusive by design.
Why inclusive AI is better for people and businesses
Building gender-inclusive AI is not only the right thing to do, it also makes business sense. From audience insight tools to image generators, inclusive systems are more accurate, more trusted and more resilient to regulatory and reputational risk.
AI will increasingly shape who gets seen, hired, funded and heard. The question isn't whether gender bias exists in AI, it's whether we choose to challenge it or quietly automate it. Inclusive AI doesn't just create fairer outcomes. It creates better ones, for people and for business.
