Tredence launches Forward Deployed Engineering practice

Tredence has launched a Forward Deployed Engineering practice and plans to build a team of 200 engineers for the unit.

The practice is designed to help large companies move artificial intelligence projects from pilot stages into operational use, initially focusing on customers in the US and Europe. The team will work across industry sectors, combining engineering and sector-specific expertise on client projects.

The move reflects a broader challenge in the corporate AI market. Many companies have invested in data platforms, models and early experiments but have struggled to connect those efforts to day-to-day commercial and operational decisions.

Tredence is positioning the unit around what it calls domain-native engineering. In practice, this means assigning engineers with experience in fields such as retail, supply chain and revenue growth management to work on AI systems tied to those business functions.

Examples include engineers familiar with markdown cycles and assortment planning in retail, network constraints and demand volatility in supply chains, and trade spend and price elasticity in pricing and revenue management. The aim is to link technical build work more closely to the processes where companies expect financial returns.

Industry focus

The practice is built for high-impact work with Fortune 100 businesses. Engineers will support projects from defining a business problem through to enterprise-scale deployment.

The new group will work across existing client technology environments rather than requiring a single software stack. Tredence listed Databricks, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Snowflake, AWS and model providers among the platforms its engineers are expected to work with.

That platform-agnostic approach may appeal to large companies with complex technology estates that are reluctant to rebuild systems around one vendor. It also reflects the reality that many AI programmes now span cloud infrastructure, data platforms and model services from multiple providers.

Tredence employs more than 4,200 people across locations including the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Riyadh, London, Toronto and Bengaluru. It serves clients in retail, consumer packaged goods, technology, telecoms, healthcare, travel and industrial sectors.

Last-mile problem

The launch comes as service providers and consulting groups compete to define the next phase of enterprise AI work. After a rush to prove concepts and test generative AI tools, attention has shifted to execution, governance and measurable business results.

Tredence framed the new practice around what it called the "last-mile" problem in AI. The phrase refers to the point at which data, systems and business processes must align for an AI tool to affect decisions at scale rather than remain an isolated experiment.

For many large businesses, that stage involves difficult integration work, workflow redesign, and staff who understand both technical models and the economics of the business area involved. This creates an opening for specialist services teams that promise a closer fit between engineering work and operational decision-making.

Tredence also said its engineers will be supported by specialised teams and an internal programme called AI Forge, which it described as an AI-first approach to problem-solving. It added that its staff hold advisory roles with hyperscalers and independent software vendors.

The planned buildout of 200 engineers over the next 12 to 18 months suggests Tredence expects sustained client demand for this type of work, especially among multinational companies seeking to turn AI investment into measurable gains in pricing, promotion, supply chains and other core functions.
